PURPOSE:To obtain new optically active diols useful as intermediates for producing carbapenem-based antibiotic substances, etc. CONSTITUTION:These optically active diols are expressed by formula I (Ar is phenylene, naphthylene, biphenylene, diphenyl sulfide or diphenyl ether), e.g. 4,4'-di-(mercapto)phenyl sulfide. The compounds expressed by formula I are readily obtained by reacting a racemic diacyl derivative expressed by formula II (R is 1-6C alkyl; Ar is phenylene, naphthylene, biphenylene, diphenyl sulfide or diphenyl ether) with a hydrolase. The compound expressed by formula II is prepared by reacting an alcohol expressed by formula III (X is halogen, alkylsulfonyloxy or arylsulfonyloxy) with dithiols expressed by the formula Ar(SH)2, providing a new racemic diol expressed by formula IV and then reacting the resultant compound with an acid halide or an acid anhydride of a carboxylic acid expressed by the formula R-COOH in the presence of a base. |
