An attempt is made, for a given observation zone, to formulate an estimated image (XP1, XP2) having a given spatial resolution within a given spectral band with the aid of a primary image (P) of this zone having this given spatial resolution within another spectral band and of a secondary image (XS1, XS2) of this zone having poorer spatial resolution in the said given spectral band. An invertible spatial transformation giving a first primary set of images of coefficients and a second primary image and then a second primary set of images of coefficients is applied to the primary image at least twice; a first secondary set of images of coefficients is generated by applying this transformation to the secondary image. Using at least this first secondary set and this second primary set, the parameters of a correlation law fc1 or fc2 are calculated, allowing the determination of a secondary set estimated by pointwise transformation of the first primary set by this law. The desired image (XP1, XP2) is obtained by applying the inverse of the said spatial transformation to the secondary image and to this estimated secondary set. <IMAGE>
