A system, for controlling the damping characteristics of a shock absorber having means for varying flow of fluid through its piston (details disclosed - figs. 3, 4, 7(A) to 9(C)), comprises means for sensing the velocity of a sprung mass such as a vehicle body and means for sensing the relative velocity between the sprung mass and an unstrung mass (such as a wheel). When direction determining signs of both the sprung mass velocity (V) and the relative velocity (Sv) between sprung mass and unsprung mass are the same, variable control of the damping characteristic C is carried out at either the extension stroke side of the piston (V positive and Sv positive) or the contraction stroke side of the piston (V negative and Sv negative) according to C = alpha .V/Sv, and when the direction determining signs of both the sprung mass velocity (V) and the relative velocity (Sv) are mutually different, variable control of the damping characteristic C is carried out at either the extension stroke side (V positive and Sv negative) of contraction stroke side negative and Sv positive) according to C = ( alpha .V. <IMAGE>
