A solenoid controlled valve (12) has a body (16) mounted within a compressed natural gas vessel (10), with a head (18) exposed outside the vessel (10). The solenoid controlled valve (12) includes a solenoid poppet (98) within a main bore (60) of the valve body (16). A valve seat (80) positioned between the solenoid poppet (98) and an outlet (74) has a flow passage (86) which communicates between the outlet (74) and, via an orifice (84), the main bore (60). A bias spring (104) biases the solenoid poppet (98) toward the orifice (84) to effect a seal (100) of the flow passage (86). A plunger (96) connected to the solenoid poppet (98) disengages the seal (100) when a solenoid coil (95) is energized.
