PURPOSE:To build up an entirely compact system by effectively utilizing a generic picture characteristic extracted from multi-gradation picture data and to realize individual picture processing with high accuracy while referencing the extracted characteristic of the picture by extracting the characteristic of the picture with detailed classification. CONSTITUTION:The device is provided with a characteristic picture element extract means 1 which extracts a characteristic picture element TDE corresponding to at least an edge picture element part having a large density change and distinguishing its leading and its trailing, or a density gradient characteristic picture element TDN representing a density gradient for a picture element part having a density gradient or a characteristic picture element TD including the edge characteristic picture element TDE and the density gradient characteristic picture element TDN from picture elements of each scanning line and with a referencing buffer 2 in which the property of the characteristic picture element TD extracted by the characteristic picture element extract means 1 is written for each relevant picture element and provided so as to be used in common by plural individual picture processing means 7. |
