PURPOSE:To improve the picture quality of a reproduced picture by selecting an MTF correction coefficient in every edge direction of a picture signal corresponding to a binarization slice level so as to suppress production of noise for picture elements of fully white level or fully black level and act MTF correction onto the picture in an excellent way. CONSTITUTION:A decoder 12 being a means setting an MTF correction coefficient in every edge direction outputs a positive direction use correction coefficient alpha1 and a negative direction use correction coefficient alpha2 in response to a binarization slice level SL of an MTF correction output picture signal J. A subtractor 7 for arithmetic operation purpose is used also for a detection means of edge directions, and its sign output S indicates a detected edge direction. Then a selector 13 selects the positive direction use correction coefficient alpha1 as an MTF correction coefficient alpha and gives the coefficient to a multiplier 8 when the sign output S from the subtractor 7 is positive, and selects the negative direction use correction coefficient alpha2 as the MTF correction coefficient alphaand gives the coefficient to the multiplier 8 when the sign output S from the subtractor 7 is negative and gives the coefficient to the multiplier 8.
