PURPOSE:To make possible accurate discrimination between normal and defective shells while eliminating fatigue of the eye of a discriminator by receiving an X-ray image on an image receiver, presenting the image on a display, and then conducting discrimination. CONSTITUTION:Cultured pearl shells 23 are thrown into a shell throw-in port 25 of a carrying box 22. The shells 23 are transferred on a belt conveyor 36 to a passed shell collecting port 26 side and when the shell 23 comes immediately below a receiver 37, the shell 23 is irradiated with X-rays by means of an X-ray generator 21. An X-ray transmission image is received by the receiver 37 comprising an image intensifier luminance multiplier tube and subjected to automatic luminance adjusting by means of a camera control 41 thus presenting a clear image on a display 39, e.g. a liquid crystal display. A discriminator discriminates between a normal shell 23a and a defective shell 23b based on an image presented on the display 39 and pushes out the failed shell 23b toward the failed shell collecting duct side by operating the operating rod 45 of a failed shell push out means 43. On the other hand, the passed shell 23a is transferred on the conveyor 36 and falls down naturally from the collecting port 26. |
