PRODUCTION OF METHANOL FROM CARBON DIOXIDE

PURPOSE:To provide a new production process for methanol where carbon dioxide can be converted into methanol by catalytic hydrogenation at a lower temperature than that in the conventional methods. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst such as a metal of group 8A in the periodic table such as Ni, carbon dioxide is hydrogenated preferably under normal pressure at a temperature lower than 200 deg.C while feeding more than 5 mole %, preferably more than 10 mole % of water into the reactor. Carbon dioxide causing the global warming can be converted into a useful substance without additive consumption of energy.
