PRODUCTION OF POLARIZATION MAINTAINING OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To provide a process for production of the polarization maintaining optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:This process for production of the polarization maintaining optical fiber consists in axially grinding both side parts on the outer periphery of a clad 2 of a preform consisting of a sectionally circular core 1 of a central part and the clad 2 existing on the outer periphery of this core 1 and having a circular outer peripheral shape in section, then drawing this preform under heating. More particularly preferably, the section of the fiber obtd. by the drawing is circular. The polarization maintaining optical fiber having the elliptic core is produced with good reproducibility by the simple process for production.
