PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material, etc., for polymers at a low cost by reacting (meth)acrylic acid with alcohols in the presence of a water-soluble polymerization inhibitor and an esterifying catalyst, then washing the resultant reactional mixture with water and reutilizing the polymerization inhibitor and catalyst in the wash water. CONSTITUTION:Acrylic or methacrylic acid and alcohols (e.g. butyl alcohol) are subjected to the dehydrating esterifying reaction or (meth)acrylic acid esters (e.g. methyl acrylate) and the alcohols are subjected to the transesterification in the presence of a water-soluble polymerization inhibitor (e.g. hydroquinone) and a water-soluble esterifying catalyst (e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid). The resultant reactional mixture is then washed with water in an amount of <=10 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. produced (meth)acrylic acid esters and the polymerization inhibitor and esterifying catalyst in the obtained wash water are subsequently reutilized to subject the (meth)acrylic acid and the alcohols to the dehydration esterifying reaction or the (meth)acrylic acid esters and the alcohols to the transesterification to afford the (meth)acrylic acid esters. |
