PURPOSE: To temporarily and dynamically increase the level of the associativity of a cache in response to behavior of a computer system. CONSTITUTION: In response to frequent reference and cache miss at a specific position in a main cache memory, one or a plurality of microcaches are temporarily assigned to the position. When the microcache is temporarily assigned, the set associativity of the specific position is increased until the microcache is assigned to another position. The microcache can be reassigned, and a necessary total cache size and the complication of a control necessary for the management of the cache can be reduced. A cache miss threshold for the reassignment of the microcache when it is beyond a prescribed value is used, and the microcache is continued to be assigned to the specific position only in the prescribed number of times of cache access being a window size. |
