The invention relates to a vitamin E derivative containing quaternary nitrogen and to a polyethoxylated vitamin E containing quaternary nitrogen as well as to processes for the preparation of these vitamin E derivatives, in which vitamin E or polyethoxylated vitamin E is reacted with a quaternisation agent chosen from halohydrins and quaternary epoxides, in order to carry out a quaternisation. The vitamin E derivatives containing quaternary nitrogen show an improved compatibility for the skin or the hair and a good dispersibility in water, in as much as they can be used as surface-active agents in cosmetic products.
