PURPOSE:To provide a bar cod reader strong against the dirt, scratches and thinning, etc., of a bar code. CONSTITUTION:A light beam 7 is scanned along plural scanning lines alpha1-alphan. Bar code read signals 14 outputted from a photodetector are compared with a threshold value Th for respective small sections omegaj in a signal processing part and converted to binarization data. The binarization data are summed up in a direction vertical to the scanning direction of the scanning lines and a vertical direction total sum value is obtained. An area where the vertical direction total sum value is larger than a bar threshold value Bth is defined as a bar area B, the area where it is smaller than a space threshold value Sth is defined as a space area S and the area between both threshold values is defined as a boundary area K or an indefinite area F. Corresponding to judgement conditions stored in a judgement condition storage part, a boundary between the bar and space areas is judged in the boundary area K and the bar or the space area is judged in the indefinite area F. |
