The pollution of the air in rooms by chemical substances is often caused by individual emittants such as writing desks, chairs upholstered in leather, couches and pieces of furniture. In clothes department stores, hundreds of men's suits and ladies' dresses are stored on clothes racks. These materials emit numerous chemical substances which were used during the dyeing and finishing of the materials. Persons who are exposed in rooms containing such items of furniture or who wear clothing thus contaminated must be prepared for possible deleterious effects on their health and wellbeing, especially if they are allergic. The invention relates to a device for disposing of such organic substances. The pieces of materials to be sanitised are introduced into a flexible tent-like construction. The closed tent is injected with prefiltered air, predried over silica gel (humidity +/-1%), and heated to 100-110 DEG C. In the process, the inflowing air passes an ozone zone generated by means of 2 Hg high-pressure vapour lamps. The chemical pollutant molecules of varying resistance thus liberated are destroyed or eliminated by the action of the heat and/or by the ozone. At the opposite side of the air inlet there is situated a multi-stage absorption unit with an upstream fan and microfilter.
