A switching apparatus, eg for a cooker hot plate, comprises a rotary switch which is closed by rotating a switching shaft 6 in one main direction from a zero position and an auxiliary switch having an unidirectionally rotatable star wheel 9 which is rotatable by a protuberance 8 on a resilient disc 7 on the switching shaft 6. Upon actuation of the rotary switch in its main direction of rotation from the zero position the star wheel 9 is not rotated. Upon rotation of the switching shaft 6 of the rotary switch in the opposite direction from the zero position the star wheel 9 is moved to close a spring contact 11 of the auxiliary switch. The auxiliary switch remains closed upon subsequent rotation of the switching shaft 6 in the main direction of rotation. Only upon return of the rotary switch into the zero position is the switching contact 11 opened again. <IMAGE>
