In a steel rope (2) which is provided at at least one end with an eye (1) formed from legs (3) of the rope end which run through the eye (1) in opposite directions, the leg-end portions (3') being connected to one another and to the steel rope (2) by means of a press-fit clamp (4), the portion of the steel rope (2) located in the press-fit clamp (4) is arranged between the two leg-end portions (3') located in the press-fit clamp (4). The press-fit clamp (4) has, at least over some of its length, a cross-sectional contour at least similar to an oval. <IMAGE>
