The invention relates to diagnostic peptides of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<a> is an amino terminal group Ala- or D-Ala-, R<b> is a carboxy terminal group -Thr or -Thr-amide, and X is Cys, or one or both X is/are missing, or of the formula <IMAGE> where R<1> is an amino terminal group Thr-, Ser-, Asn-, Leu-, Ile-, Arg- or Glu-, R<2> is Thr, Ser, or Asp, R<3> is Thr, Ser, Asn, Arg, Gln, Lys or Trp, R<4> is Tyr, and R<5> is a carboxy terminal group, the corresponding D- amino acid or the corresponding amide derivative, or R<5> is missing, and X is Cys, or one or both X is/are missing, provided, however, that the peptide is not Ser- Thr-Asn-Tyr-Thr, or to physiologically acceptable salts thereof. The invention also relates to the use of the peptides for diagnosing AIDS and to sample packs containing the peptides.
