A starting head (4) for a continuous casting installation, having a bottom part (7) which can be at least partly inserted into the hollow mould space (5) of a continuous casting mould. At least one undercut groove (9) is provided in the top side (8) of the bottom part (7). The starting head (4) has a sealing mat (14) of refractory material, the peripheral margin of which can be brought into contact with the mould side walls (2, 3), and is provided with a connecting element (11) which has a projection protruding into the hollow mould space (5), can be fastened to the bottom part (7) and can be connected to the cast billet by integral casting. In order to enable the starting bar to be easily released from the cast billet and in order to be able to set up the starting head in a simple manner, the connecting element (11) has two plates (12, 13) arranged one above the other, in which arrangement the top plate (12) is provided with the projection (17), and the bottom plate (13) can be clamped against the top plate (12) with the sealing mat (14) in between, and the bottom plate (13), on its side directed towards the top side (8) of the bottom part (7), is provided with a groove counterpart (20) projecting into the undercut groove (9) and guided in the groove (9) in a sliding manner irrespective of the clamping forces prevailing between the plates (12, 13). <IMAGE>
