A device for transporting patients, especially on stretchers, comprises a vacuum mattress with a support region and at least one lateral projecting section which can be wound at least partially around the body of a patient to be transported. The support region of the vacuum mattress (7) is formed by a mattress-like, first cushioning (9) whose width corresponds approximately to the width of the stretcher (1) and which comprises a fixed, further cushioning member (12, 13) which can be folded over the lying surface of the first cushioning (9) on at least one long side (10, 11) or on both long sides (10, 11). The first cushioning (9) and the at least one further cushioning member (12, 13) are filled with granules and can be evacuated in a manner known per se, and the width of the one further cushioning member or the overall width of the two further cushioning members (12, 13) is dimensioned such that it covers essentially the entire lying surface of the first cushioning (9) in the folded-over state. The one further cushioning member or the two further cushioning members (12, 13) are provided with at least one resilient covering layer (14, 15) on that side which faces away from the support surface of the first cushioning (9) in the folded-over state. <IMAGE>
