In a disc brake for the wheels of a motor vehicle, the brake linings loaded by a brake piston are to be prevented from being capable of rubbing against the brake disc when the brake is eased. For this purpose, when the brake piston is inactive, the brake linings are positively lifted under spring force from the brake disc. In the case of disc brakes which automatically compensate brake-lining wear during brake play, the spring force causing the brake lining to bear positively on the respective brake piston can be kept constant by mounting the particular springs engaging on the brake linings in the brake housing via slip couplings. The proposed measures can be put into effect in fixed-calliper and floating-calliper disc brakes.
