To unfold or fold up a bridge section serving to construct a fixed bridge, ropes of loading gear either on the side parts (swing out) or on the centre part (clap shut) have hitherto been proposed, the swivelling movement of the side parts being dampened. The novel method of unfolding and folding up and the novel loading gear are intended to render the delicate dampers between the side parts and the centre part of a bridge section superfluous while at the same time reducing the mechanical loading of the bridge during the unfolding and folding up and while at the same time reducing the system costs. To this end, provision is made for the centre part (21), after the lifting of the bridge section (20) for unfolding or folding up the same, to be lowered or lifted by rope drives (13), while the side parts (23) are connected with the ropes (11) on the loading gear (10). <IMAGE>
