The tape storage device comprises a base adapted to be connected to the mailing machine adjacent to an entrance to the tape path extending through the mailing machine and a substantially vertically oriented guide extending upwardly from the base. It has a tape holder for holding a roll of tape and having member defining a tape path extending from the roll of tape to a tape exit location from the tape holder. It has a mount mounting the tape holder for movement along the guide between a lowermost position in which the tape holder is inaccessible in the mailing machine, and an uppermost position in which the tape holder becomes accessible for replacement of a roll of tape and for threading the tape along the tape path and into the entrance to the tape path in the mailing machine. There is a releasable latch for normally latching the tape holder in the lowermost position. The tape holder is movable upwardly toward the uppermost position when the latch is released.
