PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compounds useful as a raw material for producing solvents and various organic synthetic intermediates in a simplified process by reacting methanol with ammonia in the presence of a zeolite-based catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Methanol is made to react with ammonia in the presence of a catalyst at 250-450 deg.C under 1-30kg/cm<2>G pressure. A catalyst prepared by bringing mordenite treated with a silicon compound into contact with a compound expressed by the formula NR<1>R<2>R<3> (R<1> to R<3> are H, unsubstituted amino, hydroxy-substituted alkyl, etc.) and heat-treating the resultant product is used as the catalyst used therein. Since the amount of produced trimethylamine in small demand can be suppressed to a low ratio of about 1%, a step of recycling and disproportionating the trimethylamine can be omitted. Furthermore, the amount of produced dimethylamine in great demand can be enhanced. |
