PURPOSE:To establish a roll gap setting means by which the proper roll gap setting of a rolling mill is stably executed and further improvements of the accuracy of thickness and yield of material are achieved. CONSTITUTION:At the time of setting the roll gap of the rolling mill by learning control, parameters of a formula for estimating the coefficient of friction that are imparted dependence by inversely calculating the coefficient of friction from the data of rolling results at different speeds of at least five points and more are learned and the initial value of roll gap or the value of roll gap at the time of changing rolling speed is calculated using the parameters and set.
