PURPOSE:To obtain 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid in high yield with hardly any formation of trimellitic acid, etc., as a by-product by oxidizing 2,6- dimethylnaphthalene and its oxidation intermediate. CONSTITUTION:An alkaline metallic compound is added to 2,6- dimethylnaphthalene in the presence of a catalyst containing cobalt, manganese and bromine or a carboxylic acid solvent having a lower acid value is used to further raise the pH of the reactional solution. Thereby, the 2,6- dimethylnaphthalene is oxidized with molecular oxygen to produce the objective 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid. |
