FLOODLIGHTING HEAD-LAMP DEVICE

PURPOSE: To provide a projection headlight system capable of projecting a wide spread controlled pattern of light to cope with low and high beam illumination. CONSTITUTION: This projection headlight system includes a curved reflector 18 and a gas discharge lamp 20. The curved reflector has mutually relating first and second optical focuses positioned along an optical axis. The first focus 26 is inside the curved reflector and the second focus 28 is spaced from the reflector. The lamp 20 is disposed at the first focus 26. An optical element 34 such as a mask or a mask-shaped mirror is positioned at the second focus 28 to create an image of a well-defined sharp cutoff within the light from the reflector 18. A light projecting lens 32 is spaced from the optical element 34 by a distance approximately equal to the focus distance of the lens and is disposed along the optical axis, in order to project the light from the second focus 28 as a wide spread controlled pattern containing the image of the well-defined sharp cutoff.
