PURPOSE: To provide a television system including an encoding and a decoding station of simple constitution. CONSTITUTION: For the transmission of a television image in digital form passed through a bandwidth-limited medium, the image is processed by image conversion and variable-length encoding. The image to be transmitted is converted into a bit stream having variable-length code words, and this bit stream is converted into a channel bit stream which is not sensitive to a transmission error so much. Consequently, maximum significant code words (representing mean luminance and rough pixel detail) of a subimage of 8×8 pixels are adapted at fixed bit positions of the channel bit stream. Those code words can be retrieved by an easy count down of bit positions and other code words are distributed over other bit positions. The length of each block having a significant code word is transmitted as well, so a decoder is relatively simplified. |
