The invention relates to a catheter having a catheter tube (124). The catheter is composed of a base tube (124a) made of a hard plastic and a surface tube (124b) with an anti-thrombogenic material covering the outer circumference of the base tube (124a). The present invention furthermore provides a catheter assembly which is used during insertion of the catheter into the blood vessel of a patient. The catheter assembly comprises a retention sleeve whose distal end is inserted into a blood vessel and which has a haemostatic valve at its proximal end, a catheter having a catheter tube (124) which is inserted from the proximal end of the retention sleeve and then inserted into the blood vessel, and a holding ring intended to fix the said retention sleeve onto the outer circumference of the said catheter tube (124) in any position in the axial direction. <IMAGE>
