An adjustable timing system in an engine (11), which has a rotating camshaft (13), which has an input belt pulley (16) driven by the engine (11), a piston (33) which engages with the input belt pulley (16), so that it is displaceable in an angular direction relative thereto, and a cupped housing (36) which is fitted on the piston (33) so that it can be displaced in an angular direction relative thereto and which is connected to the camshaft (13), a cupped cover (49), in which the cupped housing (36) is accommodated with a gap and which is connected to the input belt pulley (16), a damper (53) which contains a quantity of viscous fluid in the gap, a first seal component (55) which is arranged at one end of the gap, and a second seal component (56) which is arranged at the other end of the gap and which is characterised in that a fluid sealing function between the cupped cover (49) and the cupped housing (36) diminishes as a centrifugal force increases. <IMAGE>
