An orally or rectally administrable X-ray contrast compsn. comprises a contrast agent having the formula (I), or a salt of (I) in an aq. pharmaceutically acceptable carrier contg. at least one surfactant selected from a zwitterionic surfactant, trimethylammonium bromide, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium heptadecyl sulphate, alkyl benzenesulphonic acid, sodium butyl naphthalene sulphonate, sulpho succinate, carboxylic esters, carboxylic amides, ethoxylated alkylphenols and ethoxylated aliphatic alcohols, sorbitan ester, polyoxyethylene alkyl ethers and polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid esters. R = CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, 4-25C alkyl, cycloalkyl, unsatd. allyl (sic) or halo-lower alkyl each of which may opt. be substd. by halo, fluoro-lower alkyl or lower alkoxycarbonyl, (CR1R2)p-(CR3=CR4)mQ or (CR1R2)p-CC-Q; R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently H or opt. halo substd. lower alkyl, n is 2-5, m is 2-5, p is 1-10, Q is H, lower alkyl, alkenyl, lower alkynyl, lower alkylene (sic), aryl or aryl-lower alkyl. |
