Proceeding from a method for the regeneration of particle filter systems for the exhaust gases of diesel internal combustion engines, a burner system being operated at least as a function of the exhaust gas back pressure during a certain period (regeneration) in order to burn off the soot particles in the exhaust gas flow deposited in a particle filter, and it being possible to operate the burner system for regeneration only once a value representing a stable operating condition of a diesel internal combustion engine has been attained, the object on which the invention is based, to improve known methods in such a way that the temperature at the particle filter inlet is kept as constant as possible during regeneration at a value predeterminable as a function of system variables of the particle filter system and/or of operating variables of the internal combustion engine, is achieved in that before regeneration commences a value for the exhaust gas back pressure is registered and compared with a value, inferable from performance characteristics, which as a function at least of system variables of the particle filter system and/or operating variables of the diesel internal combustion engine corresponds to a value for a charged or uncharged particle filter, and is implemented as a function of the result of that comparison in order to keep this variable as constant as possible. <IMAGE>
