The invention relates to a method for checking reusable containers for their contents, in particular for the detection of contaminations. For this purpose, it is known to feed the containers to be examined in a closed row to a rotating machine which has a multiplicity of sample removing tubes on the rotor periphery, above the container stands. After receiving the containers, the tubes are lowered into the latter, whereupon a corresponding partial stream of the air located therein is sucked up and fed to the analysis station. The expenditure in terms of machinery necessary for this, in particular for the insertion and withdrawal of the sample removing tube, is correspondingly high and prolongs the passage times. By means of the invention, a simplification is to be provided, trouble-free separation of the respective samples to be taken one after the other being intended to be given. According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the sample removal is carried out in the detector space of an analyser by means of valve-less cross-flow modulation of measuring gas and zero (blank) gas.
