The device comprises a water-containing stainless steel housing (10). The housing (10) receives a tightly fitting cylindrical pipe (18) made of a material having a capillary effect, especially sintered glass material or filter paper. The cylindrical pipe (18) is immersed in the water over a small part of its length, and it projects above the water over a large part of its length. Due to its capillary effect the cylindrical pipe (18) absorbs water and is moist over its entire length. An insert (40) projects into the cylindrical pipe (18). Together with that part of the cylindrical pipe (18) which projects out of the water, the insert (40) forms an annular gap (46) through which breathing gas to be moistened is passed. The insert (40) has a central axial breathing gas channel (50), at the bottom end of which there is a means for passage of breathing gas into the annular gap (46).
