The invention relates to devices for handling and operating brushes, preferably toothbrushes, which represent an advanced alternative to the conventional brushes and dental hygiene means, both in terms of use and in terms of expenditure. The manually operated cleaning and brushing devices preferably meet the ecological requirements for saving of electrical energy. A modular system in which brushes, brush units and operating means are expediently combined in design and practice is claimed. The concepts shown in Figures 1 to 10 offer manually operated devices which the operating axle drives in stroke intervals by means of a pistol-shaped handle and counteracting spring force in Figs. 1-3, whereas in Figures 4 to 6 the operating axle drives the brush unit, or only the brushes, by means of a "screw drive". The devices which are driven axially radially (translationally) by lifting elements (Figs. 7-10 and Figs. 11-13) have the advantage that the brush unit and the brushes can be activated and moved simultaneously. The envisaged exchangeability of the individual brush elements is another economic and ecological advantage of the innovation.
