In a process for the spinning of staple fibres to form a yarn, fibre material delivered in sliver form is opened into individual fibres and is fed, in a quantity corresponding to the subsequent yarn cross-section, into the interior of a hollow rotor. The fibres are fed to a frustoconical inner collecting surface approximately in the direction of rotation, the collecting surface moving at a circumferential speed which corresponds at least to the feed speed of the individual fibres. The collecting surface merges into a collecting groove, into which the fibres are transferred in the course of a revolution of less than 360@ and are bundled therein to form a closed composite fibre structure. At a predetermined circumferential point, the composite fibre structure is drawn off at a draw-off speed corresponding essentially to the circumferential speed of the collecting groove. During the draw-off, a twist is imparted to the composite fibre structure. The collecting surface is made impermeable to air and has a coefficient of friction of less than 0.35 in relation to the fibres.
