An air bag module (10) structure comprises a pair of subassemblies which are coupled together to form the module. The subassemblies comprise an air bag/cover subassembly (34) and an inflator/reaction device (36) subassembly. The air bag/cover subassembly (34) comprises a cover (20) with an air bag cavity (22), a folded air bag (14) disposed within the cavity (22), and a retaining device (24) connected directly to the cover (20) to maintain the folded air bag (14) within the cavity (22). The inflator/reaction device subassembly (36) comprises an inflator (12) with gas dispensing nozzles (30), and a reaction device (18) with integrally formed structure for directly engaging the inflator (12) and for coupling the inflator (12) with the reaction device (18). The air bag/cover subassembly (34) and the inflator/reaction device subassembly (36) have respective integrally formed coupling structures for coupling the subassemblies together to form the air bag module (10). <IMAGE>
