PURPOSE:To decrease one case viscosity of the obtained electroviscous fluid and to widen the range of its working temperature by bonding at least two kinds of liquid crystal groups to one molecular chain. CONSTITUTION:The molecular chain means a monomer or (co)polymer comprising a unit or units of a molecule of an acyclic compound or a cyclic compound. The degree of polymerization of the (co)polymer is suitably 2-100, and the (co)polymer may have a bonding group such as an ester group, an amide group or a phenylene group in the molecular chain. The liquid crystal group means a bonding group containing the core molecular structure which can develop liquid crystal properties. This group may be bonded to a molecular chain directly or through a spacer. Although various groups may be used as at least two kinds of liquid crystal groups bonded to one molecular chain, it is desirable from the viewpoint of the electroviscous effect of the liquid crystal compound that the two kinds of the liquid crystal groups be the same in the sign of dielectric anisotropy, especially positive, and positive and have mesogenic skeletons similar in structure. The rate of the different liquid crystal groups bonded is suitably 0.1-50% based on all the liquid crystal groups. |
