N-Pyridinesulfonyl-N'-pyrimidinyl- and -triazinylureas of the formula I <IMAGE> (I) in which R1 and R2 independently of one another are hydrogen, C1-C8alkyl or C3-C8cycloalkyl; C2-C8alkyl or C3-C8cycloalkyl, each of which is monosubstituted or polysubstituted by halogen; C1-C8alkyl or C3-C8cycloalkyl, each of which is substituted by -NR5R6, C1-C4alkoxy or C1-C4alkyl-S(O)n-; C1-C4alkyl or C3-C6cycloalkyl, each of which is substituted by C2-C4alkenyl, C5-C6cycloalkenyl, C2-C6alkynyl or C4-C8alkadienyl; it being possible for the C2-C4alkenyl, C5-C6cycloalkenyl and C4-C8alkadienyl radicals to be monosubstituted or polysubstituted by halogen; or R1 and R2 together are a 4-5-membered C4-C10alkylene chain which can be interrupted by oxygen, sulfur or N-R 7; R3 is hydrogen, halogen, C1-C4alkyl, C1-C4alkoxy or C1-C4alkylthio; C1-C4alkyl, C1-C4alkoxy or C1-C4alkylthio, each of which is monosubstituted or polysubstituted by halogen; R4, R5, R6 and R7 independently of one another are hydrogen or C1-C4alkyl; n is 0, 1 or 2; X is C1-C3alkyl, or C1-C3alkyl which is monosubstituted to trisubstituted by halogen; C1-C3alkoxy, or C1-C3alkoxy which is monosubstituted to trisubstituted by halogen; Y is halogen, C1-C3alkyl or C1-C3alkyl which is monosubstituted to trisubstituted by halogen; C1-C3alkoxy, or C1-C3alkoxy which is monosubstituted to trisubstituted by halogen; cyclopropyl, methylamino or dimethylamino; and E is nitrogen or the methine group, and the salts of these compounds with amines, alkali metal bases or alkaline earth metal bases or with quaternary ammonium bases have good selective herbicidal and growth-regulating properties when used pre- and post-emergence.
