PURPOSE:To provide a growth promoter containing a water-soluble arabinoxylan as the active component and suitable for promoting growth of Lactobacillus bifidus living in the adult intestine. CONSTITUTION:A water-soluble arabinoxylan, especially a water-soluble arabinoxylan obtained from the arabinoxylan-containing part of a gramineous plant is contained as the active component. This promoter is selectively taken in by a lactobacillus bifidus or a Lactobacillus and a lactobacillus bifidus or a Lactobacillus can be selectively grown.
