Disclosed is a silver halide photographic material containing at least one methine compound of formula (I) or (II): <IMAGE> (I) <IMAGE> (II) and wherein Z1, Z2, Z3 and Z4 each is an atomic group of forming a 5- or 6-membered N-containing heterocyclic ring; R1, R2 and R4 each is an alkyl group; R3 is an alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic group; D1, D1a, D2 and D2a each is an atomic group of forming an acidic nucleus; V1 to V22 each is a hydrogen or a monovalent substituent; L1 to L12 each is a methine group; M1 and M2 each is a charge-neutralizing pair ion; m1 and m2 each is a number of 0 or more for neutralizing the charge in the molecule; n1, n2 and n4 each are 0 or 1; and n3 and n5 each is an integer of 0 or more. The material has a high sensitivity and storage stability.
