PURPOSE:To provide an absolute encoder in which the distance between an optical scale and a light receiving element of a detector can be sufficiently provided. CONSTITUTION:An auxiliary scale 2 on which opening parts 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 of under the length (lambda) of the minimum reading unit, and of the same number as the bit number of an absolute pattern 7 are formed, is arranged between an optical scale 1 and an absolute detecting means 3, and the opening parts 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 formed on the auxiliary scale 2 are formed so that the light transmitting the optical scale 1 does not enter the mutually adjoining opening parts. |
