A coding device for identifying a fluid container used to store different anaesthetics which has a coupling device for attachment to an anaesthetic machine comprises one or more passive coding elements for the bottle arranged in various patterns in the coding region that correspond to the anaesthetic liq. in the container, with the number of passive elements being less than the number of these regions and also less than the number of active coding elements in the machine for detection of the passive elements. The same number of passive elements is used for all the different anaesthetics. Also claimed are (i) the method for setting up this identification system, and (ii) the identification method using the above device, whereby an error signal is generated if the number of active elements detected is not equal to the number of passive elements, whilst if the number of passive elements is equal to a pre-determined number of passive elements then a pattern of passive coding elements unique for each anaesthetic type is detected. |
