The invention relates to a portable article in the form of a card for transmitting voice messages stored in the article. This article is of the sort that includes means forming a microphone (3a) and means forming a loudspeaker (3b), a memory device (21) for storing voice messages in the article, an autonomous device for supplying energy, and operating keys (6, 7) for causing messages to be recorded in the memory device and for playing back the stored messages. The article is characterised in that the microphone means and loudspeaker means (3a, 3b) are one and the same device (3) and the operating means (6, 7) serve both as means of security and as indicators of the status of the portable article.
