The invention relates to the hydrolysis of chitin and/or chitosan in their dry form with reduced moisture. At least one hydrogen halide gas is used as oxidising agent for the polymer chain of the chitinous products to be hydrolysed, with optional use, for all or part of the hydrogen halide gas to be applied, of the gaseous product from the reaction of at least one hydrogen halide acid with one or several strong acids. The invention also relates to the preparation of D-glucosamine oligomers by such a process. <IMAGE>
