In the apparatus, a cover, e.g. a saucer dome with ventilating vanes, is mounted, e.g. by means of a hinge, on a groove, e.g. a seating ring, bounding a roof opening and is constructed to be lockable on the opposite side, the locking element being actuated by the opening energy of the lifting element. A variable-length lifting element is linked between the cover and a pivoting lever, to the end of which a variable-length damping element is also linked. The damping element can be constructed both as a damper and as a thrust or traction element which can be extended or retracted in a damped manner. The other ends of these two elements are linked, at a spacing from each other, to a mounting member which is fixed, near the hinge in the profile frame beneath the plane thereof. In the closed position of the cover, an angular spacing alpha >/= 5 DEG still exists between the pivoting lever and the retracted damping element, which, in this arrangement, are located beneath the plane of the profile frame.
