The paper samples (S1-S3) are laid on a massive table with a number of holders (21) for scanning appts. (25) mounted on rigid arms (23) supported by vertically adjustable heads (22) with setting wheels (26). Each sample is vacuum-held on a surface movable in three dimensions by stepping motors (31,32) under computer control (11).The vacuum is applied through a microporous metallic plate from a controlled reservoir (15) and pump (14). The results of measurements at points on the samples are printed out (16).
