Method for the hydrolysis of plant materials, esp. straw or wood, comprises passing liq. water through the crushed material under pressure at 155-240 deg.C, and then passing an alkaline soln. through the material at 150-220 deg.C.Pref. water is passed through the material at 180-220 deg.C, followed by alkaline soln. at 160-180 deg.C. The temp. of the alkaline soln. is pref. increased with decreasing NaOH concn. in the range from 1-5%.
