The motor (1) for a windscreen wiper (2) is controlled using a sensor (9) establishing the vehicle's speed changes, and as the speed increases or reduces, so a corresponding output signal is sent to the motor control relay (5). The sensor deduces the speed from a rotating component of the car and a comparator (17) differences this with an earlier deduction of speed in a memory store (22). A threshold gate then interfaces this difference with the relay. The sensor is connected in with the ignition circuitry through a frequency/voltage converter (13). Alternatively, the sensor can operate using the intake ram air pressure to deduce vehicle speed.
