Oxidn.-resistant ceramic fibre composite having multi-phase matrix comprises: (a) fibres of compsn. in the phase diagram Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2, where the fibre vol. amt. is 20-70 vol.%; (b) the matrix contg. a 1st phase of Al2O3, SiO2, CaO, MgO, FeO or their mixts. or cpds.; (c) the matrix contg. at least one further phase of Si-O-C; (d) porosity of 5-25 mol.%; and (e) the Si-O-C phase serving as binder for the material.Pref., the matrix contains an additional phase of C. The Si-O-C phase surrounds the fibres and/or the matrix phase. The matrix phase contains the compsn.; nAl2O3.nSiO2 (where n/m = 1-2).
