Vehicle fuel-injected IC engine design

An IC engine with fuel injection uses an extremely lean mixture and has exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Parameters for mixture control are the injection duration, the setting of the EGR valve and, if necessary, the throttle flap setting. There is a combustion chamber pressure sensor to detect misfires to enable the controller to set the lean mixture limit. The ignition system uses at least one follow-up spark so that the delayed pressure rise in the combustion chamber caused by the all the ignitions can be used by the controller. The duration between the start of ignition and the start of flame propagation is also used by the controller.
